# Why do we need Sunbird RC?

Stand up trusted registries and verifiable credentials quickly — for any domain.

{% embed url="<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWDyQWuB_lw>" %}

Sunbird RC lets you quickly build registries of individuals, objects and entities for a wide variety of domains.

{% hint style="info" %}
Sunbird RC is one open-source package with two components, **Registry** and **Credentials**. You can use either one on its own, or both together. Each component has its own release line and version number.
{% endhint %}

## Build registries through configuration

Adopters build core electronic registries using configurable schemas and workflows. Sunbird RC then automatically creates all the APIs, workflows and a default user experience needed by key registry stakeholders.

## Issue credentials people can carry and verify

Sunbird RC provides microservices to issue portable, standard schema-based credentials that are compliant with the [W3C Verifiable Credentials](https://www.w3.org/TR/vc-data-model/) data model, with built-in attestation and verification flows. Credentials can be issued from a Sunbird RC Registry or from any existing system of record. These credentials:

* can be printed with QR codes
* can be translated into many languages
* can be verified by anyone, using the issuer's public key

Along the way, Sunbird RC handles enrolment, authentication, data ownership, search, issuance and management of verifiable credentials, claim attestation between users and attesters, and sharing of credentials with user consent.

## Built to scale and integrate

<table data-search="false"><thead><tr><th width="200">Quality</th><th>What it means</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Scalable</strong></td><td>Built from independently deployable microservices that can be scaled horizontally as volumes grow.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Always up to date</strong></td><td>Supports both synchronous and asynchronous updates, so data stays current.</td></tr><tr><td><strong>Interoperable</strong></td><td>Built on open standards and protocols, so it integrates with other systems and applications without reinventing the wheel.</td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="info" %}
**In short:** Sunbird RC gives organizations a secure, scalable way to manage and verify digital identities and credentials — making access and permissions easier to manage, and giving individuals greater control over their own data.
{% endhint %}

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://rc.sunbird.org/learn/readme/why-do-we-need-sunbird-rc.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
